Painting Kitchen Cabinets

Painting your cabinet is a great experience and you may even enjoy every moment of it through little discoveries on the way. If your cabinet and your choice of paints greatly depend upon the way your cabinet would look inside the kitchen. There are some paints that have to go with the decor of the whole kitchen and might end up as mismatch if you apply them depending on your whims and fancies. Therefore, painting kitchen cabinets should be taken a serious task that can turn around even the most outdated cabinet into an attractive piece of furniture.

If you have an old cabinet that is a few decades old then you must ascertain the wood that is used in it. If it is made of solid wood then the chances are that it would have remained so without much wear and tear in spite of the rough use. You can covert this with a glossy finish or stain it if the latter has nice grains on it.

If it is slightly damaged or dented then you need to repaint it aftertaking out the old paint by first emptying the whole cabinet of its contentsand then cleaning it with soap and warm water. You then need to sand themgently and then remove the old paint and then apply wood putty to the cracksand the dents and then sand them all over again. When this is over you canstart to paint them in whatever color you want.

If you need an antique look both dark colors and the light colors are used. If your kitchen is rather small in area then white or off white can make it look spacious as they reflect the sun rays or the rays from the artificial lighting system. For large kitchens painting kitchen cabinets with black and light colored counter top is a great sign of beauty.

You may have a different choice of paints if your cabinet is of sleekmodern looks. You may choose the spray paint instead of the brush whilepainting them as these have no ornamentation and are flat surfaced. Besides, their geometrical design doesn’t allow for any paint smudges and marks on theireven surface which otherwise would look out of place.

However, you must apply primer after the sand paper has been applied asa prerequisite for the paint to stick on the cabinet for a long time to come. You may either use water based or oil based painting once it is primed. Thewater based paints dry faster than oil based paints and latex paint is seen tobe more long lasting than oil paint. If you take note of the above points while painting kitchen cabinets then you will have no room for disappointments.
